Medical Image Compression Using Wavelet Transform and Pyramidal lattice Vector



Abstract
Until recently, medical images such as X-ray films are stored in storage space and retrieved for diagnosis. The costs of storage space, time and labors are very high. To overcome these problems, new methods of digital image technology are
introduced and
developed, which is PACS. For efficient usage of memory space and communication channel, a new image compression algorithm using wavelet transform is proposed and applied to mammograpic image in this paper. The proposed compression algorithm is
basically composed of the biorthogonal Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) using 9-7 tab Daubechies' FIR filter and the uniform cubic Lattice Vector Quantization. For the effcient bit allocation, vector codebooks for each subimage are generated with
the
cubic lattices Zn(n=16, 8, 4, 12). The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to JPEG in terms of the entropy and PSNR.
